Qualifications: A doctorate or equivalent in applied linguistics with an emphasis on Chicano/Latino language development, first and second language acquisition, and the role of language in the education of linguistic minority and ESL children is required.

A general knowledge of the language experiences of Chicanos/Latinos is preferred with a specialization in the application of language studies to the preparation of teachers. A background in teacher education is desirable as is a second area of specialization and ability to teach in related areas, for example written communication skills. The candidate will have knowledge of Chicano/Latino linguistics and sociolinguistics and the application of applied linguistics to the education of linguistic minority and ESL children. The Department is an interdisciplinary one so the candidate will be expected to have a good grasp of comparative methodologies.

CSUN is a Learning Centered University. The successful candidate will be expected to join faculty and staff in a commitment to active learning, to the assessment of learning outcomes, and to multiple pathways that enable students to graduate.

At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States.

Responsibilities: The candidate will normally be expected to teach "Language Acquisition of the Chicana/o and ESL Speakers," in addition to other relevant courses. The standard teaching load for the faculty at Northridge is 12 units per semester although reassigned time may be available for research and/or curriculum development. All professors are expected to advance the skill development of their students. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the field by publishing and participating in professional organizations. The candidate will advise students on career opportunities and support and participate in student-sponsored activities. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to working with an ethnically and culturally diverse student population.
