Funds are available for MA/PhD studies starting in 2007 in a project aimed at documenting language change and variety in spoken Afrikaans.
The project is funded by SANPAD (South Africa-Netherlands Research Programme on Alternatives in Development) and is conducted in collaboration with our research partners at Rhodes University, the Meertens Institute (Netherlands), Stellenbosch University and Northwest University.
The project has funds for two full-time MA students and one PhD candidate starting in January/ February 2007. There are also opportunities for postdoctoral researchers through National Research Foundation funds.
In addition to scholarship funding, researchers working on the project can be nominated for training through the Research Capacity Initiative (RCI) run by SANPAD. The RCI programme is arguably the best funded scholarship in South Africa. Approximately USD 22,000 (R160 000) is spent on workshops and training (excluding tuition) for students who have completed their Masters and are embarking on a PhD. The call for scholarships is open to all South African citizens and women and members of previously disadvantaged communities are especially encouraged to apply. Postdoctoral candidates wishing to apply for NRF funding can be of any nationality.
The project will focus on building networks in Afrikaans communities, often in rural and marginalised areas, with special emphasis on non-standard varieties. These communities are most at risk from underdevelopment and are affected by urbanization and land-related issues amongst others. It is imperative to document aspects of language change and dialectal variation.
The project has a number of avenues for MA, PhD and postdoctoral research. These include but are not limited to: - Syntactic aspects of varieties of Afrikaans - Language change in varieties of Afrikaans focussing on the language of younger vs older speakers - The effects of globalization, migration and economic realities on Afrikaans communities
Knowledge of Afrikaans or a West-Germanic language other than English would be an advantage.
