New MSc in Forensic Speech Science
In October 2007 the University of York will launch a new MSc program inForensic Speech Science.
The program is both theoretical and practical, providing a thoroughgrounding in the application of linguistics, phonetics and acoustics tocriminal investigations. The focal areas of study are speakeridentification, analysis of questioned utterances (determining what wassaid on problematic recordings), speaker profiling, and voice line-ups.
Students will gain direct experience of analysis of criminal speechrecordings, and will also undertake research in speaker identification.
The program is delivered in conjunction with one of the world’s leadingforensic speech laboratories, JP French Associates (www.jpfrench.com).Students will have the opportunity to work closely with members of thelaboratory during the taught and research components of the MSc, andthrough visits to the laboratory.
The MSc is aimed at(1) students with a background in phonetics, acoustics or sociolinguisticswho are considering doctoral research or careers in fields such as speechtechnology or the law;(2) professionals who encounter spoken materials in criminal contexts,especially those engaged in the law, government and law enforcement work orbranches of forensic science.
