Subject: Concordia Linguistics Outreach Project

Inspired by the work of Maya Honda, Wayne O'Neil and others, students andfaculty in the Linguistics Program at Concordia University in Montreal havelaunched the Concordia Linguistics Outreach Project (CLOUT). Our goal is totransport the educational power of modern linguistic science out of theuniversity via workshops in elementary and high schools, prisons, publiclibraries, etc. The decision to seek alternative educational settings wasrooted both in a desire to share the wonders of linguistics with theoutside world, and also in the hope that the nature of linguistic sciencewould get the minds of non-specialists excited about scientific inquiry. Wehave set up a mailing list and a web site athttp://linguistics.concordia.ca/clout/ where we have posted informationabout some of our experiences and resources that we are happy to share. Wewelcome contributions of other resources-we have already received some fromprominent linguists-and our goal is to cooperate with linguists everywhereto expand the scope of outreach work that the field engages in.
