Abstract:

Evaluation in Media Discourse presents the first book-length corpus-basedaccount of evaluation, using a corpus of one hundred newspaper articlescomprising a 70,000 word comparable corpus, drawn from both tabloid andbroadsheet media. This book offers a new way forward for analysing theexpression of opinion, by proposing an innovative framework of evaluationthat can be applied to different types of discourse. It provides detailedexplanations and justifications of this framework, as well as demonstratinghow this is part of the larger framework of media discourse. Illustratedwith many authentic examples from news discourse, and integrating competingapproaches to evaluation, the book underlines the importance of context forthe functions of evaluation. It also makes frequent reference to theproduction circumstances of newspaper discourse, in particular theso-called 'news values' that shape the creation of the news. Cutting-edgeand insightful, this monograph will be of interest to academics andresearchers in the fields of (critical) discourse analysis, corpuslinguistics, and media language. Since it is written in an accessiblestyle, it will also be suitable for students taking courses in those areas.
