Abstract:

A Study of Chinese Colour Terminology

Weiyuan XuAustralian National University

This study represents a comprehensive investigation of Chinese colourterminology through both synchronic and diachronic perspectives.

We find that: In Modern Stander Chinese, basic colour categories aredesignated by eight basic colour terms which anchor the nomenclaturesystem. Tertiary terms are often morphologically derived from, andsemantically defined by, the basic terms. Secondary terms provideinteresting evidence of language change. There is no single internalsemantic structure constant across basic and non-basic terms. The potentiality of syntactic function and collocation versatility ofcolour terms are generally determined by their morphological structures andsemantic attributes. The gradual increase of varieties of functions; ofovert grammatical constraints; and of the probability of syntacticextension is the trend in the development of syntactic function of colourterms.

Some figurative usages of colour terms stemmed from universal psychologicalassociations, others were based upon Chinese-specific etymological orcultural factors. Western languages and cultures have significantlyinfluenced MSC colour terminology. New colour terms used to be createdoverwhelmingly through semantic derivation. In more recent times they havebeen created mainly through morphological combination and affixation. Thedevelopment of Chinese colour terminology conforms by and large to Berlinand Kay's universal evolutionary ordering.
