Meeting Description:

Arabic has been taught in the Low Countries since the Renaissance andtranslating from and into Arabic has always been a key activity in thestudy of that language at our universities. Paradoxically, however, thedidactics of Arabic as a modern communication tool on the one hand and thedidactics of Arabic translation on the other hand have never developed intofull-fledged academic disciplines. The purpose of this conference,organised by University College Francisco Ferrer, is to address themjointly since the teaching of Arabic is part and parcel of our Arabictranslator training programme. The conference offers a forum for(re)examining established areas of knowledge as well as exploring newpractice and research. Papers may be related to theory and praxis, but thecore domains we wish to study are: teaching Arabic as a second/foreignlanguage, translation studies, comparative stylistics, terminology studies,sociolinguistics and LSP.

Presentations are not to exceed 30 minutes, including ten minutes forquestions. Proposals should be sent to Philippe Anckaertlangues.culturesbrunette.brucity.be before 15 May 2007. Abstracts (between250 and 500 words) should be accompanied by a bionote (maximum 100 words)and a brief description (maximum 50 lines) of the presenter's expertise inthe field (publications, seminars, projects, etc.). A selection of paperswill be published by Presses Ferrer in Idioma, 'Langues et cultures' series.

The conference languages are Arabic, English and French.

Venue and accommodation: the conference will take place on 19 and 20October 2007, at University College Francisco Ferrer, Square Anneessens 11,1000 Brussels, Belgium. The registration fee of 130 includes theconference pack, lunch and coffee. Transportation and accommodation need tobe booked by delegates separately.
