Description:

The School of Philosophy Psychology and Language Sciences (Linguistics and English Language) is seeking to hire a Research Assistant to work on a three year AHRC funded project on verb movement in Faroese, beginning September 2006. The project requires the RA to develop materials for experiments with native speaker subjects (adults and children); to travel to the Faroe Islands to locate subjects, to run the experiments , and to gather data of naturally-occurring speech between adults and children; and to transcribe recorded material. The RA, who will be based in Edinburgh when not conducting experiments and collecting data, will also be involved in the analysis of the data and in writing up and presenting the results of the research.

The successful applicant will have native or near-native competence in Faroese, and some background in linguistics, ideally including experience in working with syntactic data. Experience of experimental work is highly desirable, or a willingness to learn the necessary techniques of experimental design and data analysis. S/he will have completed at least a BA in linguistics, Faroese language, or a related discipline.

The post is tenable from September 2006 The salary range is on the AR1A scale from £20,044 - £30,002, with a maximum starting salary of £26,470.
