Abstract:

Conversations between AIDS counsellors and their clients bring delicate andpotentially threatening issues into play. In this study Anssi Peräkyläapplies the principles of conversation analysis to his exploration of AIDScounselling, using data from video-recorded counselling sessions in aLondon teaching hospital. He meticulously analyses this data to show howvarious questioning techniques, in this case arising from the Milan SchoolFamily Systems theory, operate in these situations, and how counsellorsattempt through the design and placement of their questions to achieve thecooperation of their clients, with varying success. His conclusions providea timely and illuminating insight into the management of a sensitive topicthrough various techniques of indirectness.

"This is an excellent theoretical book that discusses the face-to-faceinteraction of counselling....An excellent book for all counselors to readand a highly recommended book for all medical and academic libraries."AIDS Book Review Journal
