Description:

Part-Time Lecturers in Heritage Arabic, Heritage Hindi, Heritage Persian, Heritage Tagalog, and Heritage Vietnamese

Position: The Department of Linguistics at the University of California, San Diego (http://ling.ucsd.edu) invites applications for part-time lecturer positions in the following languages taught in our Heritage Language Program: Arabic, Hindi, Persian, Tagalog, and Vietnamese. All lectureships are 33% to 100% time, for the full academic year beginning July 1, 2006, and ending June 30, 2007. Classes are intended for heritage speakers with good comprehension skills, varying degrees of fluency and literacy, and significant non-native features in their output. All lectureships involve teaching classes devoted to either communicative and cultural competence or to linguistic analysis of the language of instruction. In addition to instruction and grading, responsibilities also include designing course syllabi, preparing all course materials (including exams), and attending HLP meetings during the academic year and the annual HLP fall workshop prior to the start of classes in September.

Qualifications: The successful applicant will be a native or near-native speaker of Arabic, Hindi, Persian, Tagalog, or Vietnamese, with experience teaching the relevant language to non-native students of the language, preferably in North America or Western Europe. Demonstrable training in modern linguistics or ACTFL/OPI certification in one of the languages is preferred. Prior experience researching or instructing heritage language populations is highly desirable but not required. Ability to work together in coordination with another instructor and the Academic Coordinator as a team is essential. The candidate must hold at least a B.A. (or equivalent) degree.

Application details: A letter of application and curriculum vitae should be sent to the address below.

All candidates should arrange for two (2) referees to send letters of reference under separate cover to the same address, and should include the names and addresses of the referees (including e-mail addresses and fax numbers) with the application. Review of applications will begin April 7, 2006 and will continue until positions are filled.

UCSD regulations: Salaries are in strict accordance with UC pay scales. Non-citizens should state their immigration status.
