Dissertation Abstract:

This dissertation proposes a model of metrical analysis under aconstraint-based framework, namely, Optimality Theory. This proposal workson grids and constituents organized in a multidimensional plane ruled byphonological principles, which control the projections onto a metricalgrid. This approach aims at translating the properties of main stress ofthose languages, which deal with prosodic word final elements asextrametrical ones and also with those languages with the trisyllabicwindow condition. This proposal will demonstrate that it is not necessaryto make any reference to such aspects, since they will be naturally derivedfrom the constraint hierarchy. The formulation of this model will be apriori subsidized by the main stress pattern of Brazilian Portuguesenon-verbs and then it will be applied to other languages.
