Abstract:

Emotion Talk Across Corpora offers new insights into how English speakerstalk about their own and others' emotions. It is the first book-lengthtreatment of 'emotion talk' in four registers of British English -conversation, news reportage, fiction and academic discourse - to combineresearch in two well-known linguistic approaches: appraisal theory andcorpus linguistics. Using a 20-million-word sub set from the BritishNational Corpus, it combines small- and large-scale corpus studies ofemotion terms and their patterns with an analysis of texts according to amodified version of Appraisal theory. The book is a major contribution tothe study of language and emotion, drawing on findings from cognitivelinguistics, psychology and (linguistic) appraisal theory to model andinterpret emotion talk, and will appeal to all researchers interested inthe use of emotion talk in naturally occurring discourse.
