Abstract:

Increasingly, children grow up hearing two languages from birth. Thiscomprehensive textbook explains how children learn to understand and speakthose languages. It brings together both established knowledge and thelatest findings about different areas of bilingual language development. Italso includes new analyses of previously published materials. The bookdescribes how bilingually raised children learn to understand and usesounds, words and sentences in two languages. A recurrent theme is thelarge degree of variation between bilingual children. This variation in howchildren develop bilingually reflects the variation in their languagelearning environments. Positive attitudes from the people in bilingualchildren's language learning environments and their recognition that childbilingualism is not monolingualism-times-two are the main ingredientsensuring that children grow up to be happy and expert speakers of twolanguages.

Abstract:

This textbook brings together research on literacy and multilingualism froma variety of settings: the learning of English in migrant destinations, immersion and bilingual education, and the maintenance of heritagelanguages. Designed to be accessible to students from a wide range ofdisciplines, the book explores multilingualism as a global phenomenon atboth the individual and societal level, and literacy learning in a widevariety of contexts. It uses both these discussions to explore thetheoretical and policy issues which are behind current educationalpractice, and points to possible ways forward. Students are introduced toexamples of innovative and best practice from a range of internationalcontexts, and discussion points and suggested activities encourage them tobuild on their own experiences as language learners. This is an idealintroductory text for students on courses where a critical understanding oflanguage in education is necessary, as well as being a useful summary ofthe field and its future directions for researchers, practitioners andpolicy makers.
