Position: Postdoctoral Senior Research Associate in FirstLanguage Acquisition

For the QNRF project: Baseline Data for Arabic Acquisitionwith Clinical Applications (QNRF NPRP 08-738-5-107)

The QNRF project "Baseline Data for Arabic Acquisitionwith Clinical Applications" at Qatar University in Doha, Qatarinvites applications for a full-time postdoctoral SeniorResearch Associate, to begin Fall 2010. The position is fortwo years.

"Baseline Data for Arabic Acquisition with ClinicalApplications", which began in Fall 2009, is an extensiveinterdisciplinary project in Linguistics and Children'sHealth. Project website is at http://lughataltefel.qu.edu.qa.The project is multi-institutional and international. Theoverall goal is to amass an extensive new body ofknowledge about normal Arabic first language acquisitionand make it available on the internet. The new onlinematerial will be used by linguistic researchers for afuller understanding of language acquisition as a humancognitive capacity, enabling them to answer severalcritical questions which till now have been unanswerabledue to lack of data. The new online material will alsoprovide speech-language pathologists working withArabic-speaking children with crucial resources that tillnow are lacking, to improve the quality of life of thechildren they work with and their families.

Required qualifications include a PhD in First LanguageAcquisition, Speech-Language Pathology, or Psychology;IT proficiency; experience with Statistics; experience ona research team; experience in research projectmanagement; native competency in oral and writtenArabic; and near-native competency in oral and writtenEnglish. Primary responsibilities include managing avibrant team of research assistants in Doha, liaising withthe project's Qatari and international collaborators, dataanalysis, and other research-related duties.
