Associate professorship in Modern Arabic

The Department of Contemporary Middle East Studies at the University ofSouthern Denmark invites applications for a tenured position as associateprofessor in Modern Arabic.The position is available from 1st January 2011.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Arabic language, linguistics or pedagogy,as well as a background in Middle East and/or Islamic Studies.

The ideal applicant has- A research record in language acquisition of Arabic as a foreign orsecond language,- Experience in communicative, proficiency-based, and/or content-basedteaching of Arabic,- Significant teaching experience at the college level.

Duties include research as well as teaching and supervising languageclasses primarily at the advanced level and teaching content-based cultureand society classes in Arabic. The successful applicant is expected toparticipate actively in the development of our expanding programme ofteaching and research in Arabic as a foreign/second language. Equalapplicants with native or near-native speaker ability in Arabic will bepreferred.

Applications will be assessed by an expert committee. Applicants will beinformed of their assessment by the university.

As part of the overall assessment of the applicant's qualifications, aninterview and/or a trial lecture may be applied.

Appointment in this position will also encompass teaching obligations withregard to related degree programmes.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreementbetween the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation ofProfessional Associations):

If the successful applicant has not documented teaching experiencecorresponding to assistant professor level, the applicant will be engagedon trial for the first 18 months.
