Fixed-term appointment (5 years, A 13 on the German salary scale) for alecturer in general linguistics at the newly-established department ofgeneral linguistics at the University of Bamberg. Job summary:The position involves teaching at the undergraduate level (5 hours perweek), including courses in both a BA and a Masters Programme. The mainareas of instruction are the sociolinguistics of minority languages in theNear East, language contact, and typology. However, besides these coreareas, the successful candidate will have considerable freedom to focus onhis/her own special areas of interest and contribute towards developing theteaching profile of the department. Besides teaching, the candidate will beexpected to fulfill administrative duties and contribute to establishingthe web-based resources at the department. The candidate will be encouragedto complete a Habilitation (second thesis, generally required for aprofessorship in Germany) over the time span of the appointment. Theposition will commence on October 1, or as soon as possible thereafter.
Qualifications:- PhD in general linguistics in hand at the time of appointment.- Demonstrated expertise in a language of the Near and Middle East,preferably Arabic or other Semitic language.- Research experience in at least one of the following fields: empiricalsociolinguistics, bilingualism and minority languages, documentation ofendangered languages, language typology- Commitment to excellence in teaching, preferably experience in coursesrelevant to the position.- Clear evidence of potential for research and publishing in English atinternational level.- Knowledge of German would be a distinct advantage, but is not essentialas the language of teaching is English.
