Education First PhD scholarship on second language acquisition of Englishgrammar at the Research Centre for English and Applied Linguistics at theUniversity of Cambridge.
Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship on second language acquisition ofEnglish grammar, at the Research Centre for English and Applied Linguistics, atthe University of Cambridge. The scholarship is sponsored by Education First, aworld leading educational organisation in language learning, as part of the recentlaunch of the Education First Research Unit at the University of Cambridge. TheEducation First Research Unit was launched in February 2010 to promote researchin second language learning of English and innovation in language teachingthrough a systematic cross-fertilisation between linguistic research and teachingtechniques and curricula. The goals of the EF Research Unit are aligned with theEnglish Profile Programme, a collaborative programme to enhance the learning,teaching and assessment of English worldwide, launched by the British Council,Cambridge ESOL, Cambridge University Press, University of Cambridge, EnglishUK, and other academic institutions.
Research Topic: Applications are invited for a research project leading to a PhD inone of the following areas:
1. L1 effects on learner grammars: typologies of learner grammars based on L1effects.
2. Age related developmental effects: adult vs. child second language acquisition.
3. The effect of input on learner grammars: explicit instruction vs. immersion.
Proposals should focus on specific morphosyntactic phenomena or interactionsbetween grammar and its interfaces with interpretation (discourse, informationstructure, semantics) and/or processing.

The successful candidate should have a degree in (applied) linguistics or relateddiscipline and will be expected to collaborate with members of the EF ResearchUnit and researchers working on English Profile at RCEAL.
The closing date for this application is Tuesday 7th of Septebmer 2010; shortlistedcandidates will be invited for an interview on Wednesday 22d of September 2010.The successful candidate is expected to start January 2011.
