In our everyday life, communicative processes are relevant in almost allsituations. It is important to know whether you should say something whichis adequate in the situation or whether it is better to say nothing at all.Communicative competence is fundamental for a successful life in oursociety as it is of great importance for all areas of life. Therefore, itis not surprising that communicative competence is the subject of manytheoretical and empirical approaches and, in consequence, research on thistopic is diverse. We focus our contributions on linguistic aspects ofcommunication. In the centre of interest are linguistic orientedperformances of different forms of communicative competence, languageacquisition, and language disorders. The topics of this book concern thedescription of methods for studying language in the brain, the interactionbetween language and cognition, discourse acquisition of children, literacyacquisition and its precursors, the use and acquisition of the signlanguage, models and training of writing and reading, nonverbalcommunicative competence, media competence, communication training, developmental dyslexia, the treatment of stuttering, and the description oflanguage disorders.

- provides a state-of-the-art description of different areas in thecontext of communication competence- includes articles from international experts in the field- deals with the foundations of communicative competence, languageacquisition, adult competence, competence training and language therapy
