William W. Goodwin (1831-1912) was Eliot Professor of Greek at Harvardfrom 1860 to 1901, and was the first director of the American School inAthens. This, his most important book, was written for nineteenth-centuryAmerican students to make available to them the latest Europeandevelopments in the understanding of Greek syntax, as well as his ownoriginal material. It went through several editions between 1860 and 1890, andremains an invaluable resource for scholars of the Greek language. This is areissue of the 1867 edition, published in Cambridge Massachusetts by Severand Francis. It presents a detailed and well organized discussion of moods,tenses, infinitive, participles and verbal adjectives. Goodwin includes a largecollection of examples taken from a wide range of major Greek writers toillustrate every variety of each construction.
