Description:

Varieties and Determinants of Absorption in Narrative Film

Film viewers typically exhibit high degrees of absorption in the film'sstory world including events and characters. As yet there is nosatisfactory definition of what state of mind absorption in film viewingexactly is and what factors account for it. The project aims at obtainingan understanding of the experiential states involved and their determinantswith an emphasis on stimulus factors. To this end, firstly questionnairesfor a variety of absorption-like states will be validated. Validation willinvolve a comparison with on-line measures of cognitive and emotionalprocessing. Secondly a set of experiments will be carried out in which testfilms have been manipulated on the basis of available theories of (literaryand filmic) narrative styles and procedures and their effects on (readerand viewer) experiences. The experimental materials will be manufactured incollaboration with film and story authors. The project is highlyinterdisciplinary. The successful candidate will need to couple knowledgeof cognitive models of narrative discourse processing and a demonstrableaffinity with film and literary theory with experience in psychological(on-line) experimentation. Affinity with video production or editing is arecommendation. For details and an extensive project description see:http://www.uva.nl/vacatures/vacatures.cfm/0DCF3D9F-F5F0-404C-B095AF2278164434
