Description:

The Department of Language and Foreign Studies of American Universityinvites applications for the position of Chair of the Department ofLanguage and Foreign Studies, to begin in the fall semester, 2011.

Specialization: open, but the successful candidate will have expertise inFrench, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish and Latin American studies,and/or Comparative Literature. Professor or Associate Professor rank required.

Responsibilities: Chairing the Department of Language and Foreign Studies,which entails strategic planning, development of emergent areas ofexpertise, faculty and staff management, coordination of interdisciplinaryactivities, assistance with curriculum building and securing externalfunding. Teaching two courses per year in the applicant's general field.Maintaining an active and productive research agenda.

Candidates should possess an outstanding record of scholarship; exceptionalcommunication and interpersonal skills; experience as department chair orprogram director; the ability to lead the department in developing andimplementing a compelling vision for its research, education and serviceprograms. Salary commensurate with experience.
