Associate Professor for Language, Literacy & Culture Ph.D. ProgramUniversity of Maryland, Baltimore County

The interdisciplinary Language, Literacy and Culture (LLC) Ph.D. Program atthe University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applicationsfor a tenured Associate Professor beginning August 23, 2011. LLC is aninterdisciplinary program of study of language, culture, human interactionand communication with faculty from seven departments: Africana Studies;American Studies; Education; English; Gender and Women's Studies; ModernLanguages, Linguistics and Intercultural Communication; and Sociology andAnthropology.

Applicants must have an earned doctorate in one of the participatingdisciplines or a closely related field, administrative experience, and asuccessful research and teaching agenda in one of the following areas: Language, literacy, discourse or applied linguistics Media, multiliteracies, or globalized communication Identity, culture, ethnicity, race or area studiesMajor responsibilities include teaching core and seminar courses, research,academic advising, and chairing and serving on Ph.D. dissertation committees.

Since its beginning in 1998, the program has awarded 45 Ph.D.s, and itcurrently has over 60 students. Through courses and seminars, internshipsand research, students in the program investigate ways in which socialstructure, social and cultural assumptions, and language use affectinteractions among members of different social and cultural groups andimpact upon educational and training programs, communications systems, andpublic policy formulation.
