Please note: This is a new version of a previously announced book.

Writing development has been a key area of research in applied linguisticsfor some time, but most work has focused on children's writing atparticular ages. Christie and Derewianka draw on extensive research in bothprimary and secondary years to trace the developmental trajectory from age5 or 6 through to 18.

Using a systemic functional grammar, they outline developmental changes inwriting in three major areas of the school curriculum - English, history, and science - as children move from early childhood to late childhood andon to adolescence and adulthood. The book considers the nature of thecurriculum at various stages, discussing the interplay of curriculum goals, pedagogy and developmental changes as children grow older. It also exploreshow emergent control of the different subjects requires control of varioussubject specific literacies and considers the pedagogical implications oftheir findings.

School Discourse will be of interest to anyone involved in the writingperformance of children in schools, particularly applied and educationallinguists.

'The authors have made a tremendous contribution to our understanding ofthe paths learners follow in written language development from earlychildhood to late adolescence. They provide, for the first time, detailedand clearly articulated descriptions of the language students learn tocontrol as they write key genres across the curriculum. The book will be afrequently-consulted reference work for teachers, curriculum developers, and writing researchers.'- Professor Mary J. Schleppegrell, School of Education, University ofMichigan, USA.
