The University of Michigan is seeking a strong candidate to lead theUniversity Center for the Development of Language and Literacy (UCLL) atthe Institute for Human Adjustment (IHA) in the Rackham Graduate School.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to provide leadership for theCenter's clinical, research, and teaching missions. These missions are toprovide excellent assessment and innovative language and literacyinterventions to a diverse set of individuals with communicationdifferences and disorders; to provide leadership in expanding thescientific knowledge base of language and literacy and related disorders;and to educate and promote awareness and understanding of language andliteracy and related disorders. We are seeking an individual with highinitiative who will take advantage of the many opportunities available atthe University of Michigan for collaboration across units and departments.The individual will have opportunities to develop new or improved clinicalprograms, training opportunities, and research activities that relate toUCLL's mission.

The Center is located on the UM campus. The clinical programs servechildren, youth, and adults with language and learning disabilities. TheCenter's University of Michigan Aphasia Program (UMAP) is widely recognizedas a leader in the treatment of chronic aphasia. Students from nearbyspeech-language pathology programs train as student interns at UCLL, and UMstudents work as research, office, and clinical assistants. The Center iscurrently home to a number of externally funded grants focusing on the roleof oral language in the literacy development of African American Englishspeaking students. The Center has begun a new initiative in dyslexia,offering a state-of-the-art website to the public at large, a specializedclinical service program for students with dyslexia, and collaboration withother UM faculty in research focusing on the neural markers of dyslexia.

This position will be made available to the strongest candidate as either a50% appointment (Director) or a 100% appointment (Director and eitherexpanded clinical service responsibilities or an externally funded researchor instructional appointment). We hope to fill the position with acandidate who can begin in 09/2011; some flexibility in starting date ispossible. The Director provides overall leadership for the clinical,research, and training programs; evaluates the effectiveness ofdepartmental operations and implements organizational changes; directs theimplementation of all program objectives, policies, procedures andactivities; and oversees the fiscal and human resource planning andallocation, marketing, fundraising and administrative operations.

Candidates should hold a PhD in speech-language pathology, educationallinguistics, educational psychology, neuropsychology, or another relatedfield. They should have demonstrated a record of administrative, programdevelopment, and clinical supervisory experience; a record of high qualityresearch; and a min of 5 years employment experience in a relevant workcontext. Additional desirable characteristics include an understanding andappreciation of overall University objectives and the ability tosuccessfully navigate the complexities of a university setting.
