Description:
The Department of Romance and Classical Languages at Michigan StateUniversity invites applications for Director of Language Programs in thetenure system (rank open). The language director will oversee the languagecourses in the department, engage in research, and teach two courses peryear. In addition, the Director will work with coordinators and willsupervise the training of fixed-term teaching faculty and teachingassistants.
The department, newly formed from the merger of the Departments of French,Classics and Italian and Spanish and Portuguese, is located in the Collegeof Arts and Letters and is part of a vibrant language community that hasbenefited from university support evidenced by the newly established Centerfor Language Teaching Advancement (CeLTA), an expanding Less CommonlyTaught Language programs, a recently created global studies in arts andhumanities major, world-renown study abroad initiatives and a strong SecondLanguage Studies doctoral program.
It is anticipated that the successful candidate will become part of agrowing research community in second language studies (http://sls.msu.edu)We seek a person with strong management skills and scholarly interest inlanguage teaching and learning, including the use of multi-media. Thesuccessful candidate must have near-native proficiency in one Romancelanguage and familiarity with another is desired. A Ph.D. is required,preferably with a specialization in applied linguistics or second languageacquisition. The application deadline is November 12, 2010.
