The Department of World Languages at the University of South Florida isseeking a Chair to begin a twelve-month contract at the rank of FullProfessor on August 7, 2011. Salary negotiable.

Responsibilities: The new Chair of World Languages will be leading adepartment that houses the Modern Languages, Classics, and Linguistics. TheDepartment offers the modern languages of Arabic, Chinese, French, German,Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, withthe B.A. in French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish and the M.A. inFrench and Spanish. Classics offers Latin and Ancient Greek, with a B.A. inClassics and a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Classical Civilizations, and isalso involved in M.A. and M.A.T. degrees. Linguistics offers an M.A. inApplied Linguistics and is a partner with the College of Education in aPh.D. in Second Language Acquisition and Instructional Technology.

A primary responsibility of the Chair will be to represent the Departmentin the College of Arts and Sciences and in the University, which iscommitted to developing the Department as part of its strategic goal ofgiving its students a truly global education.

In addition to fostering the synergy and extensive interdisciplinaryactivity that exists within the Department, the Chair will work with otherunits and departments, especially in the humanities, to develop newmulti-disciplinary and interdisciplinary initiatives, particularly at thegraduate level. The new chair will seek to increase collaboration withunique USF interdisciplinary initiatives such as USF World, the PatelCenter for Global Solutions, our Global Academic Partners program, and therecently formed School of Global Sustainability.

Qualifications:Essential: The new Chair of World Languages must have a Ph.D. with aspecialization in one of the disciplines represented by World Languages,with the rank of Full Professor, and an outstanding record in scholarshipand teaching. We are seeking a dynamic and innovative leader.

Preferred: The new Chair of World Languages should be knowledgeable aboutthe major issues and questions the profession is engaged with as well asbest practices in developing language proficiency in both the European andnon-European languages. The new Chair should also have a record ofsuccessful interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary work. Strong preferencewill be given to someone who has demonstrated superior leadership inchairing a department.
