The Institute for Intelligent Systems (IIS) and the Psychology Department
at the University of Memphis invite applications for a tenure-track
Assistant Professor position to begin in August 2011. The position is a
joint appointment primarily in the IIS with a home department in Psychology.
All candidates with an empirical research program in the cognitive sciences
will be considered, but focus areas of research include Cognitive Science,
Educational Technologies, or Human Computer Interaction. Some examples of
specific subareas of interest may include cognitive modeling/simulation,
intelligent tutoring, educational/serious games, robotics, animated agents,
embodiment, emotion, motivation, dialog and discourse.
Applicants must have completed (or be completing) a Ph.D., must have a
record of interdisciplinary publications, an active research program that
will attract external funding, and a strong commitment to graduate and
undergraduate teaching. Salary is competitive and commensurate with
qualifications. A successful candidate will be expected to spearhead new
externally funded research initiatives, to build and lead a team of
graduate students in Ph.D. research, and to teach courses at the graduate
and undergraduate levels.
The Institute for Intelligent Systems consists of 30 faculty members across
10 departments and 4 colleges (Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Education,
and Audiology and Speech Language Pathology). The IIS offers a graduate
certificate in Cognitive Science and is affiliated with BA and MS programs
in other departments. The IIS has received over $20 million in external

The University of Memphis Psychology Department offers a bachelor's degree
in Psychology as well as master's and doctoral degrees in Experimental,
Clinical, and School Psychology. The Department is also the home of the
Center for Applied Psychological Research, one of the most successful
centers created under the State of Tennessee's Centers of Excellence
