Assistant Professor in Second Language Education (Chinese)Department of Teacher EducationThe Department of Teacher Education at MSU, is seeking one or moreassistant professors in second language education, with an emphasis on Chinese.

To meet the rising demand for Chinese language teachers and expand theglobal dimension of its internationally recognized teacher educationprogram, the College of Education at Michigan State University (MSU) isseeking scholars with a demonstrated interest in second language education,teacher education, and Chinese Language and Culture. MSU College ofEducation faculty have a long history of scholarly activities in China andwith Chinese educators. The Confucius Institute at MSU, jointly establishedwith Chinese Language Council International, China Central TV and RadioUniversity, has become a major international pioneer for Chinese languageand culture education. Jointly, the Teacher Education Department and theConfucius Institute have mounted a Chinese Teacher Certification Program tomeet the need for teachers of Chinese in Michigan and surrounding states.

These tenure system positions will be located in the Department of TeacherEducation. Candidates will be expected to participate in activities withthe Confucius Institute, potentially including teaching, research, andprogram development, and can seek affiliation with other academic unitswithin the College. These are academic year positions with an expectedstarting date of August 15, 2011.

Major responsibilities: Successful candidates are expected to conductresearch, teaching, and outreach in second language/world languageeducation, desirably with an emphasis on Chinese language. They are alsoexpected to seek external funding from a variety of sources to supportresearch activities, and to contribute to on-going activities andinitiatives in the Department, College, and University.

Qualifications: Applicants should have an earned doctoral degree and arecord of scholarly activities in a relevant field of Applied Linguisticsor Education, such as second language education; child and/or adolescentsecond language acquisition; heritage, bilingual and/or dual languageeducation; linguistically and culturally diverse students; or teachereducation. A research agenda that includes Chinese language teaching orChinese language learning and proficiency in Chinese are highly desired.Applicants with an interest in the preparation of world language teachersmore generally are also desired.
