The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL)invites applications for a faculty research scientist position, with aspecialization in linguistic pragmatics. Demonstrated research expertisemay include any of the following: discourse structure; conversationstructure; illocutionary intention; information structure; and register.Key to CASL research issues are research skills in cross-cultural orcomparative pragmatics and acquisition of pragmatic competence in an L2.The ideal candidate also has a demonstrated interest in exploring howsocial identity and social relations are related to language use.Specialization in a specific language or family - especially Arabic, Korean,Chinese, or Persian - is desirable, but not required for the position. Thesuccessful candidate will work within multidisciplinary teams on researchprojects that enable government employees - especially foreign languageprofessionals - to improve their job performance. We welcome applicationsfrom candidates who apply either qualitative or quantitative empiricalmethods; and the ideal candidate will be familiar enough with both to shaperesearch projects appropriately.

Appointments to CASL are as members of the research faculty of theUniversity of Maryland under renewable three-year contracts, with highlycompetitive salary (12-month) and benefits.

Qualifications: Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in Anthropology,Interlanguage Pragmatics, Linguistics, Sociology, or a related discipline;a record of empirical research relating to analysis of language use; arecord or strong promise of publication; and excellent written and oralcommunication skills. The Center seeks people who can contributesubstantially to the strategic direction of CASL and who will participatein multiple research projects. The candidate must demonstrate willingnessto engage meaningfully in interdisciplinary projects to solve real-worldproblems, and to work collaboratively with a range of institutions andresearchers.

Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship and have, or be willing to obtain,the appropriate security clearance.

CASL, established in 2003, is the nation's 10th university-affiliatedresearch center. Its mission is to conduct state-of-the-science researchthat results in improved performance on language tasks relevant to the workof government language professionals. Our research focuses on improvingknowledge of less commonly taught languages; enhancing the acquisition andmaintenance of foreign language capability by government professionals;advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in governmentprofessions; and improving the quality of human language technology.
