Description:

The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) isseeking Faculty research scientists from the field of Technology and SecondLanguage Acquisition to work in its interdisciplinary research programinvestigating foreign/second language acquisition, enhancement andmaintenance by government language professionals. The successful candidatewill work with or lead multidisciplinary teams on projects involvingdistance and blended learning as integrated solutions to the urgent need todevelop job-relevant language ability rapidly, sometimes without access toclassroom instruction. Current research projects examine the intersectionof technology-mediated language training and face-to-face training, bestpractices for using technology for language teaching/learning throughoutany kind of curriculum, serious gaming, and task-based blended learning.

Appointments to CASL are as members of the research faculty of theUniversity of Maryland under renewable three-year contracts, with a highlycompetitive salary (12-month) and benefits.

Qualifications: Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in Second LanguageAcquisition, Second Language Studies, Applied Linguistics, or a relatedfield (but with significant specialization in SLA) and should possess arecord of research achievement with respect to technology and secondlanguage acquisition issues and experience with teaching foreign or secondlanguages at a distance. Candidates' research and publications shoulddemonstrate the ability to tackle complex, interdisciplinary research andto work collaboratively with a range of institutions and researchers. Idealcandidates will have interests that complement CASL's strategic partners oncampus (such as Educational Technology, Second Language Acquisition, andPsychology).

Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship and be already have, or be willing toobtain, the appropriate security clearance.

CASL, established in 2003, is the nation's 10th university-affiliatedresearch center. Its mission is to conduct state-of-the-science researchthat results in improved performance on language tasks relevant to the workof government language professionals. Our research focuses on improvingknowledge of less commonly taught languages; enhancing the acquisition andmaintenance of foreign language capability by government professionals;advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in a governmentprofession; and improving the quality of human language technology.
