Description:

The Department of English Language and Literature seeks a full-timeDepartment Head for a permanent administrative appointment carrying therank of tenured full professor beginning in July or August of 2011. Primaryresponsibilities include program maintenance and development, facultyevaluation and development, assessment, recruitment, and budget management.The Department Head will work closely with the department's variouscommittees, advocate for the department at the college and universitylevels, and work closely with faculty to secure both internal and externalresources. The teaching load is one course per year.

The ideal candidate will have a record of teaching, scholarship, andservice appropriate for a full professor; evidence of successfuladministrative experience; and proven leadership and communication skills.PhD or equivalent required. This candidate will demonstrate vision, theability to be a strong advocate for all departmental programs, andcommitment to both students and faculty.

The Department of English Language and Literature has fifty tenured andtenure-track faculty, a large contingent of full and part-time lecturers,graduate assistants, an administrative staff, and a proven history ofcongenial and collaborative work. The department offers programs inchildren's literature, creative writing, English education, journalism,linguistics, literature, public relations, and written communication. Italso maintains a strong commitment to general education (please see thedepartment website URL listed above). The Department is closely relatedwith the Institute for Language information and Technology(http://linguistlist.org/ilit/), which hosts The LINGUIST List organization(http://linguistlist.org/).

Eastern Michigan University is located in the heart of culturally-richsoutheastern Michigan, ten minutes from Ann Arbor and forty-five minutesfrom major towns and cities such as Toledo and Detroit.
