Description:

The department of Brain & Cognitive Sciences and the department of Linguistics atthe University of Rochester invite applications from students interested in pursuing ajoint PhD in Brain & Cognitive Sciences and Linguistics. The department ofLinguistics (http://www.ling.rochester.edu/) combines strengths in formal linguistics--syntax, semantics, pragmatics, phonetics and phonology--with experimental andempirical methodologies. The department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences(http://www.bcs.rochester.edu/) combines strengths in language research--languageprocessing, language acquisition, brain and language--with vision, and neuroscience, which includes computational neuroscience, learning and plasticity. The languageresearchers in these departments--along with those in Computer Science andPhilosophy--constitute Rochester's Center for Language Sciences.

This year we are particularly interested in applicants who want to investigate theformal syntactic and semantic properties of language structure using experimentaland empirical techniques. We welcome applications from students interested inworking in the interdisciplinary environment provided by the Center for LanguageSciences, which encourages using the tools of both linguistics and the othercognitive sciences in investigating linguistic problems. Students interested in thejoint Brain & Cognitive Sciences/Linguistics PhD program should apply through theBrain & Cognitive Sciences department(http://www.bcs.rochester.edu/graduate/guidelines.html), by January 15, 2011 (notethat though the web page lists January 1 as the deadline, applications for the jointdegree received by January 15 will be given full consideration). Please mention yourinterest in the joint BCS/LIN degree in your application. For further information, please see the Center for Language Sciences web pages(http://www.bcs.rochester.edu/cls/) or contact Jeff Runner(runnerling.rochester.edu).
