Description:

The PhD positions involve research training and aim at the completion of a PhDdissertation within a maximum of three years. As part of the training, PhDstudents will take courses offered by the National Graduate School inLinguistics (LOT). A place in the programme entitles students to supervision,office, network and library facilities, assistance in finding housing as well asparticipation in the institute's support system for linguistics-related expenses(including attending conferences and LOT schools). The student can participatein the Academic Professionalism programme of transferable skills. A maximum ofthree grants will be made available from external sources, for which UiL OTSwill be nominating candidates. These Reinhart grant amounts to a monthly sum of1600 EUR (max), payable at the beginning of each month. They are allocated for atrial period of one year, to be extended upon positive evaluation of thestudent's progress by a further two years (maximum). No grants can be offered topermanent residents of the Netherlands.

Applicants should have an MA degree (or nearing completion, expected graduationby 1 July 2010) in theoretical linguistics, computational linguistics orexperimental linguistics (language acquisition, psycholinguistics, phonetics,text linguistics). Applicants should speak and write fluent English.

Applications (by regular mail or by e-mail) should include a 3-5 page projectproposal consisting of a research question well-grounded in existing literature,supplemented with a research strategy, provisional workplan and bibliography.The application should also include a letter of motivation, a curriculum vitaeincluding contact and personal details, transcripts of academic results, an MAthesis or alternative piece of written work. Further documentation shouldinclude copies of your most recent diploma and passport, a financial statementand/or an application for a Reinhart grant, and the contact details of tworeferees (names, affiliations and phone numbers or e-mail addresses).Preferably, reference letters are included. Applications that do not include aresearch proposal will not be taken into consideration. Candidates are free tocome up with their own research topic, but they are strongly advised to visitthe UiL OTS research groups document on the website and explicitly target theirproposal at one or more of the local research groups. E-mail applications shouldbe sent in pdf or doc (not docx) format. Please observe the following: specifyyour name in the message as well as in the topic, include a list of attachmentsin the message, and include your name in the title of each attachment. Hard copyapplications should be marked 'PhD Application' Receipt of your application willbe confirmed within 5 working days.

The first round of interviews will be conducted during the first half of April,either in person or by telephone. Results will be communicated to intervieweesby April 26. If you are invited for the second round, you will be offeredassistance in rewriting your project proposal to suit our particular conditionsand expertise. The rewritten proposal should besubmitted to Maaike Schoorlemmer by e-mail by May 16, 2010. If applicable,additional written work allowing us to assess your suitability for the programmeshould also be submitted by that date (for example, a finished MA thesis). Thesecond round of interviews will be conducted in Utrecht on June 1 and June 2,2010. Final decisions will be made by June 30, 2010. The preferred starting datefor the grants will be October 1st, 2010.
