In support of a major multidisciplinary Arts and Humanities ResearchCouncil funded project Language and Linguistic Evidence in the 1641Depositions, led by Dr. Barbara Fennell, we are seeking a ResearchAssistant or Postdoctoral Research Fellow in SoftwareDevelopment/Humanities Computing. You will work with the PrincipalInvestigator (PI) and a team of other linguists, computer specialists andhistorians to further develop and analyze a digitized corpus of quasi-legalstatements from witnesses to the 1641 rebellion in Ireland. Consulting withHumanities Computing experts in Dublin, the postholder will developfacility with IBM LanguageWare™, and will work with the PI and Early ModernEnglish Research Fellow to develop the ontologies needed to manipulate thedigital corpus in order to be able to interrogate it about the nature ofthe language represented within it (for interpretation by historicallinguists, dialect and text analysis specialists and cultural, politicaland social historians). The postholder will then proceed to help develop aninteractive research site for use by linguists, historians and lay inquirers.
To be appointed as a Research Fellow you must hold a PhD in a relevantcomputer science discipline, or to be appointed as a Research Assistant youmust hold a Master's degree plus the appropriate level of experience thatdemonstrates the required skills and capabilities. You should havedemonstrated expertise in java programming, databases, XML, and have astrong understanding of modern web technologies. You will be disciplined,but creative and innovative, and motivated by the creation oftransformative research technology. A flair for user interface design andvisualization techniques would be prove advantageous.
A Research Fellow will be appointed at the appropriate point of Grade 6-7scale (£29,853 - £36,715 per annum), and a Research Assistant will beappointed at the appropriate point of the Grade 5 scale (£25,001 - £28,139per annum).
