It is clear that linguistics has a great deal to offer the Arts and Humanities:'it is the responsibility of linguists to better educate the... members of otherprofessions' (Isac & Reiss, 2008, p. 309). However, this responsibilityrequires that we as linguists recognize the critical distinctions between theirviews of language and our own. We invite proposals, in English or French, forpapers focusing on the contributions of linguistics to the humanities, the arts,or the performing arts, as well as the potential offered by literary texts forstudy within linguistics.

Il ne fait aucun doute que la linguistique peut apporter une grande contributionaux arts et aux humanités. Comme l'affirment Isac et Reiss, « il incombe auxlinguistes de sensibiliser (...) les membres des autres professions » (2008 :309). Pour ce faire, il nous revient toutefois, en tant que linguistes, de biensaisir les différences entre notre compréhension de la langue et la façon dontles autres la conçoivent. Nous vous invitons à soumettre, en anglais ou enfrançais, des propositions portant sur la contribution de la linguistique auxarts, aux humanités ou aux arts du spectacle, ou encore sur les possibilitésqu'offrent les textes littéraires à la linguistique.

'Vowels Ploughed into Other': Linguistics and the Arts & HumanitiesAPLA 34 / ALPA 34University of Prince Edward Island, Charlottetown, P.E.I.November 12 & 13, 2010

No scholarly endeavour takes place outside language. Nowhere is this moreevident than in literature, philosophy, history, religious studies or theperforming arts: all take some aspect of language use as their object of study.It is clear that linguistics has a great deal to offer the Arts and Humanities:'it is the responsibility of linguists to better educate the... members of otherprofessions' (Isac & Reiss, 2008, p. 309). However, this responsibilityrequires that we as linguists recognize the critical distinctions between theirviews of language and our own. Conversely, the creative uses of language aspursued in the arts and humanities provide linguists with cross-cultural anddiachronic data. Drama, prose and verse demonstrate the constraints and thepossibilities of language, and can thus enrich the data with which linguists work.

We invite proposals, in English or French, for papers focusing on thecontributions of linguistics to the humanities, the arts, or the performingarts, as well as the potential offered by literary texts for study withinlinguistics. Proposals for papers treating other areas of linguistics are alsowelcome, and graduate students are especially encouraged to submit.

Presentations will be 20 minutes long followed by a 10-minute question period.Abstracts should be no more than 300 words in length, excluding title andreferences, and must be submitted no later than Monday, August 20, 2010.

L'étude des propositions sera faite de façon anonyme. Une réponse vous seracommuniquée à la mi-septembre.

Les frais d'inscription pour le colloque sont de 75 $ (40 $ pour les retraitéset 20 $ pour les étudiants). Les auteurs doivent être membres de l'ALPA.
