Meeting Description:
The ABLA 2010 Conference will take place against the background of theEuropean Year of Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. The mainpurpose of this gathering is to provide a meeting place for Belgian appliedlinguistic researchers and practitioners where they can generate ideas onlanguage related issues, foster a stronger and larger community, anddisseminate as well as promote research in applied linguistics. We especiallywelcome active participation from junior researchers and students who areinterested in any areas of language learning and teaching at any levels.
Inclusion and Exclusion and Language Figures of the 2009 Eurobarometer onpoverty and social exclusion show that 37% of European poor people thinkthat their poverty is due to the fact that they do not have the necessary levelof education, training or skills. Ten years after Heads of State andGovernments committed to a major drive against poverty in the EU, 2010 willmark the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion toaddress questions that arise, e.g.:How can one ‘include’ people and groups into structured systems that havesystematically ‘excluded’ them in the first place? Why is ‘language’ not mentioned in the ‘barometer’?
It was the late Edward T. Hall (2009) who pointed out that also inmultinationals high level managers find themselves either ‘in the box’ or ‘outof the box’, based on their cultural backgrounds and the language they speak. In education and training, language plays a crucial role. Which role doeslanguage play in 'inclusion' and 'exclusion'?
The principle of ‘inclusion-exclusion’ is a method used in maths for problemsolving. At its 2010 conference ABLA will host a symposium on ‘Inclusionand exclusion’ and calls for contributions that shed light on barriers forinclusion and how they are/may be lifted. We hope that specific andinterdisciplinary research as well as daily (good) practice will meet indiscussions on the needs of different groups of learners, of different ages, ranks and impairments, for different languages, situations, and functions.
The one-day event includes a plenary talk, parallel presentations, a postersession on research projects as well as discussions in the two researchnetworks.
