Abstract:

Discourse Anaphora: A Cognitive-Functional Approach

Ming-Ming PuUniversity of Maine, Farmington

Discourse anaphora has long been the focus of considerable research in suchdiverse fields as linguistics, psychology, cognitive psychology andartificial intelligence because its study is fundamental to ourunderstanding of the relationship among cognitive processes, discoursecoherence, and information distribution. In discourse production andcomprehension the speaker and hearer have separate and often conflictingprocessing needs, yet the hearer is able to quickly and uniquely identifyvarious referents coded by given anaphora of the speaker's choice with thestatuses of the referents and their contexts ever-changing. Such a tacitagreement between the speaker and hearer must stem from a collaborativeeffort in building a congruent mental structure of discourse wherereferents are introduced, reinstated or discarded, and duly tracked.

This book proposes a cognitive-functional principle to account for how theconstruction of mental structure determines the use and resolution ofdiscourse anaphora, and provides quantitative, cross-linguistic analyses ofempirical and text data to demonstrate how the principle operates indiscourse processing. The cross-linguistic study between two historicallyunrelated languages, Chinese and English, has revealed further that theoccurrence and distribution of discourse anaphora is more universal innature than language-specific.
