Assistant Professor in Second Language Education: ChineseDepartment of Teacher EducationCollege of EducationMichigan State University

The Department of Teacher Education at MSU, a national leader in teacherpreparation and research on teaching, teacher learning, curriculum, policy,and international education, is seeking an assistant professor with ademonstrated interest in second language education (with an emphasis onChinese), teacher education, and Chinese language and culture.

MSU's College of Education faculty have a long history of scholarly activitiesin China and with Chinese educators. The Confucius Institute at MSU, jointlyestablished with Chinese Language Council International has becomes apioneer for Chinese language and culture education and teacher education.Jointly, the Department of Teacher Education and the Confucius Institutehave mounted a Chinese Teacher Certification Program to meet the need forteachers of Chinese in Michigan and surrounding states.

This tenure stream position will be located in the Department of TeacherEducation. Candidates will be expected to conduct research, teaching, andprogram development within the Chinese Teacher Certification Program. Theis an academic year position with an expected start date of Fall semester(August 16) 2012.

Major responsibilities: A successful candidate is expected to conductresearch, teaching, program development, and outreach in secondlanguage/world language education, teacher education, teacher learning,curriculum, and/or policy in the context of Chinese language learning. Thecandidate is also expected to seek external funding from a variety of sourcesto support research activities, and to contribute to the on-going activities andinitiatives of the Department, College, and University.

Qualifications: Applicants should have an earned doctoral degree and arecord of scholarly activities in a relevant field of Applied Linguistics orEducation, such as second language education; child and/or adolescentsecond language acquisition; heritage, bilingual and/or dual languageeducation; linguistically and culturally diverse students; teacher education; orcurriculum and Instruction. A research agenda that includes Chineselanguage teaching and learning is highly desired. Applicants with an interestin the preparation of world language teachers more generally are alsoencouraged to apply.
