In Wales, the Welsh Language Board is abolished and the roles will be instead consolidated into a new single position held by Meri Huws, pro-vice chancellor at the University of Wales Trinity St David.

Welsh is a Celtic language that is spoken by approximately 20% of householdsin Wales. There is a weekly Welsh-language newspaper and radio station, and in February 2011 Welsh was granted official status within Wales, but the situation is still precarious.

The government has recently been in support of revitalizing and promoting the use of Welsh in official platforms, but it is unclear what they hope to accomplish with this reorganization.
