Description:

The Department of Linguistics in the Faculty of Arts at the University ofAlberta invites applications for the position of Department Chair with tenure atthe associate or full professor level. The Department consists of 11 full-time,continuing faculty members and is currently home to 40 graduate students atthe Masters & PhD level. Linguistics has a strong commitment to empiricaland experimental approaches to linguistic research and faculty conductinvestigations in phonetics, the morphosyntax and semantics of Amerindianlanguages, child bilingual acquisition and impairment, corpus linguistics,psycholinguistics, phonology, cognitive linguistics, L1 and L2 acquisition,language documentation & revitalization, computational historical linguistics,and sociolinguistics. The Chair will be someone with a strong sense of collaborative leadership anda clear commitment to continuing to develop the Department's standing withinthe University, within Canada, and internationally on the cutting edge of data-centered approaches to the study of human language and linguisticdevelopment. The Chair will support a culture of grantsmanship andcontribute to the development of graduate and undergraduate programs in theDepartment and will foster the activities of the in-house research facilities—the Centre for Comparative Psycholinguistics, Language DocumentationResearch Cluster, Alberta Phonetics Lab, and Language Acquisition Lab; anactive participation in one or more of these groups would be expected.

Candidates with demonstrated administrative experience will be preferred,and must hold the PhD, together with a distinguished record in universityteaching and research (including a strong track record of appropriate grantactivity) in areas of interest to the Department. The successful candidateshould have strong interpersonal communication skills and a commitment toexcellence in teaching and research, as well as a scholarly track recordsuitable for appointment at a senior rank.
