The University of Agder invites applications for one full-time permanentposition as Professor in English Linguistics at the University of Agder(Kristiansand campus) in the Faculty of Humanities and Education,Department of Foreign Languages and Translation.

The appointee may be assigned teaching and supervision in Englishlinguistics at all academic levels, including the doctoral level.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Translation is also responsible forteaching English in the teacher education programme. Applicants' school-related work as well as experience in continuing and further education willtherefore be considered.

The appointee must be able to participate in work related to teaching,examinations and administration within relevant subject areas and accordingto existing regulations.

Further, in accordance with his/her description of position and professionalarea of expertise, the appointee may also be assigned work outside of thefaculty/department with which the position is associated, for example inconnection with continuing and further education (EVU). Applicants' previousresearch activity and participation in professional networks will also beconsidered.

The appointee must be able to document linguistic breadth in his/her researcharea and teaching experience. Further qualifications within one or more of thefollowing subject areas are required: linguistic system studies (includinggrammar, phonetics or semantics), historical linguistics, sociolinguistics,language acquisition and English-Norwegian contrastive linguistics. Theappointee must also have a good knowledge of modern linguistic theories.Active international publication work at a high level is a condition foremployment, and the applicant should also be able to refer to having a well-developed international network in his/her research field. It is also expectedthat the appointee will contribute to bilingual and interdisciplinary cooperation.

Documentation of relevant practical-pedagogical competency based oneducational background, teaching experience and/or academic supervision isrequired. Applicants who upon appointment cannot document this basic levelof competency must acquire it within a two-year period, for example bycompleting UiA's course in university pedagogics. Pedagogical qualificationsbeyond the basic competency level may award a competitive advantagewhen ranking professionally/academically competent applicants.

Emphasis will be placed on applicants having acquired broad administrativeexperience. It is also desirable for applicants to have a good - oral andwritten - knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language. Shouldthe applicant not have an adequate skill level in Norwegian or anotherScandinavian language at the time of appointment, he/she must acquirethese skills within a two-year period.

Consideration will be given to applicants' ability to cooperate, take initiativeand work systematically. Short-listed applicants will be invited for interviews,and may also be asked to give a trial lecture or other demonstration of theirpedagogical qualifications. With the applicant's permission, UiA will alsoconduct a reference check before appointment.
