In connection with the research project 'Networks of Knowledge' financed bythe Austrian Science Fund and directed by Bernhard Hurch, the LinguisticsDepartment of Karl-Franzens University (Graz) announces the opening of twodoctoral research positions to conduct thesis work related to the project asscientific research collaborator ("wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter"). Using theresources of the Hugo Schuchardt Archive, the project aims to examinesignificant aspects of the history of linguistics and of the research networksthat were in place in the second half of the 19th century and the beginning ofthe 20th century. The specific focus of the project will revolve around Creolelanguages, Romance linguistics, Basque studies, specific topics in generaland historical linguistics, contact languages, and plurilingualism.

Duration of the project: 3 yearsStart date: October 1st 2012Required background: Masters degree in linguistics or a related discipline. Agood knowledge of Romance languages. Knowledge of German is necessary,but we will consider applicants who are willing to learn it intensively, ideallybefore joining the project.

Requirements: scientific curiosity and interest (evidenced by participations inconferences and publications); willingness to use electronic means ofinformation management and to engage in team work; commitment to registerin the PhD program of the Linguistics department (with a possible external co-supervisor).
