We want to announce a new concentration in Language Acquisitionand Bilingualism, housed in the departments of Linguistics andPsychology at the University of Texas at El Paso. Please see theprogram website: http://academics.utep.edu/Default.aspx?tabid=47115and the description below for more information.

The Language Acquisition and Bilingualism (LAB) Ph.D. concentrationis a new option for students who wish to gain solid training in bothpsychological and linguistic theory and methodology. The programoffers students advanced training in the research methods ofpsychology, particularly those relevant to the study of language, and inthe theory and description of linguistic structure, which will significantlyenhance their language-oriented research. Students have theopportunity to complete the M.A. degree in either Psychology orLinguistics on the path to the Ph.D. in Psychology, depending oncoursework and research options selected.

UTEP is situated within the world’s largest bi-national urban area andless than one mile from the U.S.-Mexico border. The environment isprimarily bilingual, with English and Spanish being the primarylanguages. Many local residents and UTEP students are bilingual froman early age, whereas many others are in various stages of learning asecond language. That is, here we encounter the full range of behaviorrelevant to the study of language acquisition (first and secondlanguages in both children and adults) and bilingualism (the possibleinteraction of two languages and its behavioral and socialconsequences).
