Meeting Description:
How do we know how they spoke in the past? Methodologies of reconstruction in historical phonology - German, Chinese and Ancient Egyptian
Workshop at Freie Universität Berlin, July 16th, 2012
It's easy to know how the past sounded if you have sound recordings. But what do you do if you want to explore the more distant past, going back several centuries or even millennia?
We plan to spend a relaxed afternoon where we consider some of the methods of phonological reconstruction, including philological issues of three languages with vastly different writing systems. This low-key workshop presupposes no specialist knowledge of phonology or of the languages discussed.
Speakers will be:Horst Simon (Freie Universität Berlin): GermanShi Jianguo (University of Macao): ChineseFrank Kammerzell (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin): Ancient Egyptian
There will be no fee. Pre-registration is not necessary. However, we'd appreciate a short message if you plan to come to dinner with us afterwards.
Date: Monday, July 16th, 2012. 1pm-6pm.Venue: Room KL 29/111, 'Rostlaube', Habelschwerdter Allee 45, D-14195 Berlin.
