The Department of Classical and Modern Languages, Literatures, andCultures at Wayne State University invites applications and nominations for asenior scholar and Chair at the rank of Full Professor to begin fall 2013. TheDepartment offers programs in 12 languages and cultures, including 8 B.A.degrees, 5 M.A. degrees, and a Ph.D. in Modern Languages. It is a large anddynamic department with over 50 full-time faculty. The duties of theDepartment Chair include: reviewing and monitoring departmental budgets;recruiting, evaluating, and directing faculty; supervising staff; coordinatingand supervising departmental programs and activities; acting as a liaison toother units within the university; forging external and internal ties for research;actively pursuing external opportunities; engaging in community outreach;teaching and providing a supportive teaching environment.

We are seeking an active scholar who can provide leadership by developing acollective vision for the department and make significant contributions to theteaching, research and service missions of the University. The candidate'sdoctorate degree and area of expertise must be in one of the languages orrelated area studies offered by the Department (Arabic; Chinese; French;German; Greek; Hebrew; Italian; Japanese; Latin; Polish; Russian; Spanish).Of particular interest are candidates with an international reputation; withexperiences in obtaining external funding and mentoring faculty and graduatestudents and with the capacity to maintain and support the Department'srecord of excellence in teaching. In addition to administrative experience,preference will be given to candidates with a strong research program, aninterest in interdisciplinarity and demonstrated excellence in teaching.
