Title: Sign languages: emergence & transmission
Abstract:
Everywhere in the world, deaf people use sign languages. The linguistic study of these languages show they have an independent linguistic structure, different from each other as well as from surrounding spoken languages. In West Africa, a great variety of sign languages is used in a multitude of signing communities. In deaf schools, sign languages of foreign origin are mostly used. Outside of deaf education, local sign languages are used in urban deaf communities, in villages with a high incidence of deafness as well as by 'homesigners'; isolated deaf people living in otherwise hearing environments. This diversity provides a valuable opportunity to study the emergence, creation, acquisition and transmission of sign languages. In this presentation, I will discuss some striking ways in which sign languages differ in these processes from spoken languages on the one hand, and from Western sign languages on the other hand. Make sure you take note of this event in your diary!
