The Linguistics Program at the University of South Carolina invitesapplications for MA and PhD studies in linguistics for the academic year2013-2014.
The Linguistics Program at the University of South Carolina makes thefinancial support for its graduate students a priority. All PhD students inthe program are fully supported for 4 years. The program has been particularlysuccessful in securing additional support through the University of SouthCarolina Presidential Fellowship Program, the University of South CarolinaPresidential Teaching Fellowship Program, the College of Arts and SciencesDean’s Dissertation Year Fellowship competition and now has additionalopportunities for fellowship support through a generous endowment from theBilinski Foundation.
Linguistics at USC is comprehensive in its scope. Its mission is to trainstudents to pursue research and teach in a wide range of linguisticsub-disciplines. The program strives to develop students' analytical skillsand to encourage creative, critical approaches to data, models, and theories.In addition to requiring all students to have a theoretical foundation ingeneral linguistics, phonology, and syntax, the program affords students theopportunity to take coursework or pursue specializations in other areas:discourse analysis, French/German/Spanish linguistics, historical linguistics,linguistic anthropology, philosophy of language, phonology, psycholinguistics,second/foreign language acquisition and teaching, semantics, sociolinguistics,and syntax.
The Linguistics Program at the University of South Carolina isinterdepartmental in nature and interdisciplinary in orientation. It hasstrong ties to the departments of Anthropology; English Language andLiterature; Languages, Literatures, and Cultures; Philosophy; Psychology andEnglish Programs for Internationals. In addition, the Program has the supportof consulting faculty in Communication Sciences and Disorders; ComputerScience and Engineering; and the College of Education, whose areas ofexpertise are in, or related to, linguistics, and who frequently serve onthesis and doctoral committees.
