The School of Modern Languages and Linguistics wishes to recruit aUniversity Teacher, possibly at Senior University Teacher level, who willalso serve one or more terms as Director of the Modern LanguagesTeaching Centre, contributing to a range of critical language initiatives thatwill shape non-specialist provision and specialist provision for non-linguists at the University for the coming generation. The post-holder willalso be able to lead one of the major language programmes within ourCentre, preferably the French programme, teaching a range of languagemodules and overseeing the work of a team of teachers.

In addition to running a thriving programme catering to non-specialists andto engineers, mathematicians and scientists with language minors, thepost-holder will, as Director of the Centre contribute to the shaping of theUniversity's unique Languages for All programme, which aims to see halfour undergraduates studying a language by 2015, and to the ongoingexpansion of our language lab facilities into a new Learning Hub byautumn 2012 and to satellite sites thereafter. The Director will providestrategic direction, guidance, and effective line management for theCentre, and will represent the Centre on School, Faculty and Universitybodies.

The post-holder should have an MA or PhD in a relevant subject area (orequivalent experience), as well as proven teaching ability atundergraduate level, ideally with a teaching qualification and experienceof teaching one of our major languages, preferably French, to non-nativespeakers at all levels. Additionally, Senior University Teachers will have anational or international profile in language teaching development orteaching-related research.

The Modern Languages Teaching Centre provides teaching in French,Spanish, German, Italian, Latin, Arabic, Greek and Irish. MLTC staff areinvolved in a range of innovative teaching and other activities, including:tandem learning; intercultural communication; local schools outreach; andForeign Languages at Work certificates.

The University of Sheffield has been named UK University of the Year inthe 2011 Times Higher Education Awards. Beating five other shortlisteduniversities, the University was rewarded for having a strategy 'based onits values and rooted in its founding principles', as well as on itsexceptional performance in research, teaching, access, businessperformance, and involvement in the local community.
