Meeting Description:

Films and television series represent semiotically complex contexts where dialogue performs a crucial function and mirrors the importance of conversation in everyday life. Hence, it is hardly surprising that audiovisual dialogue has become the object of growing interest among scholars and professionals who explore its linguistic, pragmatic and sociolinguistic features, as well as its effects on language acquisition.

Research on audiovisual dialogue has highlighted both similarities and differences with respect to naturally occurring speech. However, more empirical studies are necessary in order to describe this language variety and draw comparisons between both original and translated film dialogue.

Audiovisual dialogue also constitutes a valuable source of spoken language data that can be exploited in second/foreign language acquisition, presenting learners with sociolinguistically rich and affectively engaging input. Yet, empirical research on the potential of L1 and L2 spoken audiovisual input is still limited. Such research would prove especially fruitful in the development of innovative educational practices and media policies geared to promoting multilingualism and language awareness.

By focussing on the specificities of original and dubbed film dialogue, the conference aims to offer an original contribution to research on audiovisual translation and language learning, both descriptively and methodologically. The conference represents the ideal conclusion of the two-year international project English and Italian audiovisual language: translation and language learning, funded by the Alma Mater Ticinensis Foundation and coordinated by the University of Pavia, with the participation of the Universities of Malta and Loughborough. The conference will thus be an important occasion to present the project results and will also be an occasion to further discussions among scholars working on similar topics.

Extended Call for Papers:

On request of several colleagues, we have decided to extend the deadline for the submission of abstracts for the conference 'The Languages of Films: Dubbing, Acquisition and Methodology'.

The new deadline is 15 March 2012.

This conference aims to offer an original contribution to research on audiovisual translation and language learning from a descriptive and a methodological perspective by focussing on the specificities of original and dubbed film dialogue. The main themes which will be investigated during the conference include linguistic aspects of original and dubbed film dialogue, the representation of conversation on the screen and the role of original and dubbed audiovisual input in second/foreign language acquisition.

More specifically, scholars and young researchers are invited to submit contributions dealing with the following topics:

- Linguistic profiles of original and dubbed film language: distinctive sociolinguistic features, pragmatic preferences and conversational patterns- Translation strategies in dubbing;- Communication modes in screen-to-face interactions and staging of multimodal meanings- Audiovisual speech and incidental second language acquisition- Audiovisual speech and teaching strategies in the foreign language classroom- The role of dubbing in the acquisition of an L2- The interaction between spoken and visual dimensions of audiovisual input for acquisitional purposes

Empirical and experimental contributions to both linguistic descriptions of audiovisual language and investigations on the role of spoken audiovisual input in second language acquisition are especially welcome.

Abstract Submission:

The official language of the conference is English. Participants are allotted 20-minute slots to be followed by 10 minutes for discussion.
