The Linguistics Centre at Universidade Nova de Lisboa is seeking a postdoctoral research fellow for a new FCT project to study the mechanisms ofcomplex sentence formation in Old Portuguese in the framework of generativegrammar. The project “Subordination in Medieval Portuguese”(PTDC/MHC-LIN/4564/2012) hopes to contribute to a deeper knowledge of thegrammar of Old Portuguese, and of the phenomena associated with historicalvariation and change.

The topics to be investigated are the following:1) Temporal interpretation in main and in subordinate clauses2) Tense and Aspect and its relation to the syntax of subordination3) Temporal composition of infinitives4) The relation between verb classes and the embedded tenses5) Restrictions imposed by connectives on the aspectual types of predicates ofthe main and subordinate clause6) Positions for the verb and the subject in the subordinate clause7) Restrictions on the selection of the embedded clause.
For detecting thetemporal interpretation of the clause, it will be necessary to study differentsyntactic and semantic factors (which is possible through the systematicanalysis of the relevant constructions:
Finite subordinate clauses introducedby lexical complementizer; infinitival subordinate clauses; adverbialsubordination; infinitivals with and without explicit subjects)

The source of the data on Medieval Portuguese will be the Corpus Informatizadodo Português Medieval (CIPM, available at The successfulcandidate will have a background in diachronic generative syntax and a strongknowledge of both Old and Modern Portuguese.
